Screambox Double Feature: History of the Occult and The Outwaters

This past weekend I seized the opportunity to do a trial run of the streaming subscription “Screambox” via Amazon Prime. The service, which prides itself on being “pure horror”, gained recognition last year when it boasted the exclusive streaming rights to Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2. A substantial portion of Screambox’s catalog seems to be derived of vintage foreign horror and direct-to-video b-movies, with a small smattering of some newer titles. Upon a brief browse through the service, I immediately likened the service to the early days of Shudder, the current heavyweight in the horror streaming market. One title that has […]Read more »

2022 in Review: What I Watched

In 2022 I watched a total of 171 movies. 142 of them were first-time watches, of which 75 were new releases for the year. I only watched the same movie more than once on two occasions, and both of them are on the list below which reflects my 10 favorite movies of the year. I struggled a bit to put this list together because despite a handful of sure-fire hits in my opinion, there was not a wealth of movies I really, truly enjoyed. I’m sure as the years go on, I will nonetheless find the movies that slipped through […]Read more »

100 Movies Bucket List: Part III

On this installment of my 100 Movies Bucket List Challenge, I watched a handful of films that were evenly split between those I had never seen and some that were re-visits for me. For the most part, nothing in this batch really stood out to me as being particularly awful, but a couple whose reputations preceded them certainly fell a bit short of expectations. Surprisingly all of the films that were re-watches more or less held up for me or exceeded my initial impressions. This list includes films watched between the beginning of March and halfway through April, bringing the […]Read more »

I watched Freddy vs Jason

Now that I’ve finally clawed my way out of the mainline Friday the 13th franchise and survived ten consecutive encounters with Jason (and Pamela) Voorhees, the time has finally come to experience New Line Cinema’s early attempt at experimenting with a cross-franchise shared universe film. While this is technically still part of my self-issued challenge to watch every Friday the 13th film, Freddy vs Jason is also technically a crossover with Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, a series that I also am interested in exploring in totality. Unfortunately, I don’t think this particular film serves as a good […]Read more »

I watched The Empty Man

I think we can all generally agree that when it comes to new movie releases, 2020 is going to be looked back upon like some kind of cultural blind spot. We only got a couple months to actually visit theaters before everything was put on lockdown. January and February, typically the months where bad movies go to die, ended up being most peoples’ only window to see something on the big screen. The few movies that weren’t postponed to the other side of the apocalypse are going to find most of their audiences in years to come as sociological archaeologists […]Read more »
